Travelling is the ruin of all happiness! There’s no looking at a building after seeing Italy. –Frances Burney
As August comes to a close and misery following a summer of travelling sets in, I find this quote very fitting. While we can all agree that we’re at our happiest while visiting new places, there’s no sadness greater than the one caused by coming home to your regular routine.
The same streets, people and activities have been waiting for you, ready to ruin your happiness at a moment’s notice. I can only imagine that some cases of vacation FOMO have been so acute that travellers wished they never went on the trip in the first place. In the case of Italy, my desperation is so real that I would definitely choose the blue pill of blissful ignorance instead of knowing what I’m missing.
